Pick a side

Eleven skills, one per card. Guess whether entry level or senior software jobs name it more, then scratch the foil.

By the Glassbox team · the week of 12 October 2026 · a four minute play

This story keeps to one week, 12 October 2026. The entry level software page starts a new count every Monday.

People assume the entry level list is the senior list with the hard parts taken out. We counted. The two lists lean different ways.

In the week of 12 October 2026 we counted 561 entry level software jobs at 196 employers, and read 559 of them for the skills each one names. The senior side of every card is 2,237 senior software jobs, counted the same way.

A guess is about the jobs, not about you. Nothing is stored and nothing is ranked.

The whole hand, face up.

5 of the 11 cards lean to entry level: Python, C++, Git, JavaScript and C. 5 lean to senior: TypeScript, Go, distributed systems, Kubernetes and AWS. Java is a point apart.

The weekly page charts 7 languages. 4 of them are named more often in entry level software jobs than in senior software jobs. The beginner list is not the senior list made smaller. It is a different list.

Each small card: the share of the 559 entry level software jobs we could read in ink, the share of 2,237 senior software jobs in grey. Sorted by the way they lean.

So which list is it?

Not a shorter senior list. Of the eleven skills on these cards, five are named more often in entry level software jobs and five in senior ones. One is a point apart. This is one week's count. We deal again every Monday.

Curious how many of these skills are already on your CV?

One week, 12 October 2026. The entry level software page counts again on Monday.

How we counted

Entry level means one of three things. The job's level reads as intern, entry level or junior. Or its title says intern, graduate, new grad, entry level, early career or junior. Or it requires 2 years of experience or less and its level isn't senior.

Software means five job types: software engineering, backend, frontend, full stack and mobile.

We look for about 250 named skills, by fixed rules, in the 559 ads long enough to read. The other 2 were too short. The senior side is 2,237 senior software jobs, counted the same way in the same week. Only skills named by jobs at 10 or more employers are shown, so one company's hiring can't make a pattern.

The jobs come from public job boards, read every six hours: employers' own boards on Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and Workable, and job sites such as Remote OK, Remotive, Arbeitnow, Jobicy, Himalayas and We Work Remotely. Each job counts once, however many boards or cities list it.

What we can't see: jobs on boards we don't read, and jobs never posted in public; skills a job names in words that aren't on our list; whether a job is filled, how many people apply, or who gets hired.
